Mercutio is Romeo’s cousin, friend and he’s the comic relief at the start of the play. After Romeo tries to make peace with the Capulets Mercutio chooses to fight Juliet’s cousin Tybalt because Romeo will not.” Mercutio angrily draws his sword and declares with biting wit that if Romeo will not fight Tybalt, he will.”Mercutio is killed in the fight this causes Romeo to kill Tybalt and get exiled and this puts more distance between Romeo and Juliet. It also makes the rivalry between the houses worse than ever in act 3. This shows that Mercutio’s death is arguably the cause for most of the things in act 3.
